Bora Bora is an island in the Leeward cluster of the Society Islands, French Polynesia, a French overseas collectivity located in the Pacific Ocean. The island is located about 230 km (140 ml) northwest of Papeete. The island is surrounded by a lagoon and a row of coral reefs. In the center of the island there is a former volcano that has two peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, with the highest point at 727 m (2,385 ft).
Bora Bora is a major international tourism destination, famous for its luxurious aqua-centric resorts. The main settlement, Vaitape, is located in the western part of the main island, in the opposite direction with the main path to the lagoon. The island produces many uses from nature around the sea and coconut trees, which has a historic economic role in producing copra.
History of Bora bora Island
In ancient times the island that has been inhabited by Polynesians around the 4th century they call "Pora pora mai te pora", which means "created by the gods" in the local Tahiti dialect. It is often abbreviated as Pora Pora which means newborn first. Because of the ambiguity in Tahiti language phonemes, this can also be pronounced Ball or Bora Bora. When the first explorer Jacob Roggeveen landed on the island, he and his crew adopted the name Bora Bora that has stood since then.
Tourism in Bora bora Island
The island's economy is driven almost solely by tourism. Several resorts have been built on motu (small islands, from Tahitian) surrounding the lagoon. Hotel Bora Bora opened in 1961, and nine years later built the first over-the-water bungalows on stilts over the lagoon. Today, over-water bungalows are a standard feature of most Bora Bora resorts. The quality of those bungalows ranges from comparably cheap, basic accommodations to very luxurious and expensive places to stay.
Most of the tourist destinations are aqua-centric; however it is possible to visit attractions on land such as WWII cannons. Air Tahiti has five or six flights daily to the Bora Bora Airport on Motu Mute from Tahiti (as well as from other islands).
Public transport on the island is nonexistent so rental cars and bicycles are the recommended methods of transport. There are also small, two-seater buggies for hire in Vaitape. It is possible to rent a motorboat to explore the lagoon.
Snorkeling and scuba diving in and around the lagoon of Bora Bora are popular activities. Many species of sharks and rays inhabit the surrounding body of water. There are a few dive operators on the island offering manta ray dives and also shark-feeding dives.
In addition to the existing islands of Bora Bora, the new manmade motu of Motu Marfo has been added in the northeastern corner of the lagoon on the property of the St. Regis Resort.

The name Raja Ampat comes from a local mythology that tells of a woman who found seven eggs. Four of the seven hatch and become kings that occupy the four largest islands of Raja Ampat while the three others become ghosts, women, and stones History shows that Raja Ampat was once part of the Tidore Sultanate, an influential empire of the Moluccas. However, after the Dutch invaded Maluku, it was claimed by the Dutch. The English explorer William Dampier gave his name to the Dampier Strait, which separates the island of Batanta from Waigeo island. To the east, there is a strait that separates the Batanta from Salawati. In 1759 Captain William Wilson sailed on East Indiaman Pitt navigating these waters and named a strait 'Pitt strait', after his vessel; This may be the channel between Batanta and Salawati.
